About this deal

At that time the politics of Scotland’s west coast islands were so far removed from the mainland they were regarded as being in an entirely separate kingdom from the rest of Alba (the Gaelic word for ‘country of the Scots’), and Somerled sought to expand his power far beyond the confines of the Scottish west coast. To get Trader Joe’s to put their name on a product is a long and arduous process. The testing panels consist of several Trader Joe’s crew members—not top-level executives—and they are highly selective. Before a product gets the greenlight, it will go through the democratic tasting panel process 6-7 times!

This was a fun dram because it revealed more to me throughout my week of sipping it, whereas the others plateaued. On the nose: Can’t remember the last time I nosed ethanol up top! Then a shy marzipan emerges once I add water. Next come raisin English muffins and Dial soap residue.Visitor Centre: The Finlaggan visitor centre features a wealth of information about the Lords of the Isles and it’s a great place to find out more about the origins of Clan Donald. Once on the island you’ll be able to walk amongst the ruins of several old stone-walled buildings (not from the time of the Lords of the Isles, unfortunately) and view an interesting collection of engraved medieval gravestones. My 1st Islay Scotch was only last Christmas. Lagavulin 16 year. I hated it at first: It was like drinking burning rubber or liquid asphalt. I didn’t understand it; however, I also don’t like wasting alcohol, so I kept going at it every day for a week. 1 dram at a time trying to understand it, and it happened after half the bottle was gone.

I have a lot of respect for a no-nonsense dram. It has everything a first-fill bourbon cask finish is supposed to have; vanilla, honey, apple, mellow oakiness. Further along the ridge of the island are the upstanding gables of a small rectangular building. Like the chapel, it is of medieval date, but survived in use into the sixteenth century, adapted into a two-storey house. Many of the grass-covered remains of other houses, kilns, and barns belong to a farming township of the same time, but others date to the medieval period. Excavations have shown that the island was laid out with several substantial buildings, including a large feasting hall and kitchens, connected by a system of cobbled roads and paths. It’s an average-tasting dram. Its only offense is it’s dull. I’d pour for guests that don’t know anything about Scotch, and they’ll like it just fine. Score 5/10 One of the more recent distilleries on Islay. Offers guided tours, whisky-tasting experiences and a gift shop.Color: Mellow gold, yellow undertones (noticeably the lightest of the five, although not a pale hue).
