The Cloudspotter's Guide covers all 10 of the major clouds and some of the more unusual rare clouds too. At the end of the book, she hallucinates a dense fog that loosens locks throughout Berlin and causes posters to slip down from the walls. Through Weiss, she meets Jonas, a meteorologist who, as a child in the GDR, took solace in the sky’s constant shape-shifting, an antidote to his grim and unyielding reality.

a gentle and reflective pursuit - one that will lead to a deeper understanding of the physical, emotional and spiritual world. watching as the rain washed the dirt from car windows, promises from fulfillment, and a small bird from a nest. Increasingly, I thought not of the character or narrator, or even of the implied author, but of the real author, Aridjis. There are loads of brilliant non-fiction books that can teach your child about the world, as well as being entertaining, funny and gorgeous to look at. There was a spring to his utterances, a buoyancy packed and delivered in anticipating of every stop, and I would put away my book or newspaper and sit back and listen to the stations as they were rolled off, one by one, uninterrupted—that is, if other presences didn’t interfere, such as plainclothes ticket inspectors or junkie musicians, their pleas for attention like dark blood clots in the city’s circulation.Second, there's a lack of interest on the implied author's part that her character is isolated and without interests. There really isn't any, or at least none sufficiently compelling to necessitate the novel's existence. If anything can provide that lift, this little book can; it's also great for anyone looking for a reading for a special occasion.

While there are some beautiful passages that I felt read true about my own experiences in Germany, the book lacked momentum and I wasn't fond of the narrators complacency, which oftentimes came across as mopey or listless. Examining the Regional Co‐Variability of the Atmospheric Water and Energy Imbalances in Different Model Configurations—Linking Clouds and Circulation.Sometimes she feels alienated from the city, sometimes cautiously assimilated, but always the weight of history presses in- as when she tours the infamous subterranean "Gestapo bowling alley", part psychic horror, part tourist trap ("Nazi, Stasi, what's the difference," shrugs the guide), or loses her bearings among the concrete slabs of the Holocaust memorial; or investigates ghostly noises coming from the empty apartment upstairs. Aridjis brings to this short novel not only a mastery of observation, but also a pace and tone that are very special. My interest in the clouds started a few years ago due to a near-miss air accident whilst learning to fly GA aircraft.

It's not just that Tatiana sees and feels and hears ghosts; every action, every thought, every word seems haunted by the past and the horrors of humanity. Tatiana is going back, attempting to escape to a solid past, but her ability to reconnect and fit into its substance is elusive and unknown. If you’re interested in determining not just what the different types of clouds are but their relationship to the prediction of weather, this is the book for you! It was written by Gavin Pretor-Pinney, (who authored another book on this list) whose aim is to gift you with moments of contemplation as you appreciate the clouds in the book. Aridjis knows that questions linger longer than answers, and that when it comes to the past, as Tatiana discovers, "the more you try to rub something away the darker it becomes".

Here’s another sweet book for toddlers and young preschoolers about a little cloud that changes shape in the sky. My instructor and I nearly got sucked into the clouds, due to the fact that he, my instructor, being the pilot in command, failed to maintain the specified distance from the clouds whilst flying under VFR. In some ways her alienation makes her an even more accurate observer than a “normal” person would be, because she focuses excessively on the ghosts who are not present as well as the strangers who are — and that, too, is part of the real Berlin. Still, this is a minor complaint about a book that has so much to recommend it, not least its ability to convey both actual and distorted realities at once.
