Description

There is synchronisation with Google’s digital assistant through the ‘Ok Google’ ecosystem that connects a compatible product to the TV. It’s relatively basic compared to leading platforms like webOS and Google TV, but the interface is straightforward and easy to navigate. Though actually, the 50UK3163DB’s uninspiring black levels mean that the reduction in contrast often seen when viewing LCD TVs from an angle is not as noticeable as it might normally be. Hook up the Toshiba Connect to a USB port and it performs like any other Alexa device, with the Alexa logo popping up on the screen when she’s in use.

Picture presets comprise Natural, Cinema, Sports, Game and Dynamic, with the first two being the obvious go-tos. The 50UK3163DB’s claimed contrast ratio of 5,000:1 is reasonably promising by affordable LED TV standards, though the set’s measured peak brightness (taken on a white HDR window covering 10% of the screen) of 336 nits doesn’t promise a particularly exciting HDR performance. Each user will have a unique cookie to help prevent a case of rate limiting all users if one particular user hits the rate limit threshold. There’s Miracast support for beaming the screen on your mobile device to the TV in lieu of Chromecast.

If multiple variations of your router appear in the network selection screen, select the one which does not have 5GHz at the end.

App support includes Netflix, Prime Video, YouTube, BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub, All4, My5 and BritBox for video, along with the rest of the UK catch-up apps available in Freeview Play. But if you have any plans to pick up one of Sony or Microsoft’s new gaming systems, you’ll want to start saving for a TV capable of doing them justice. Night-time scenes in Netflix’s The Power of the Dog are murkily described, one scene where Benedict Cumberbatch’s Phil Burbank walks down a staircase is hard to make out details aside from the bannister, his face and hat. As Trinity escapes the agents in the opening scene, the Tru Flow conducts its work in a stable manner – aside from some blurriness, judder and the slight unreality motion often presents, it’s a smooth performer. As far as ports go, the WK3C includes a CI slot, headphone jack, USB and HDMI on the side of the TV and a Composite Video In input, satellite, antenna, Digital Audio Out (optic), Ethernet, VGA and two more HDMI ports on the back. Blues are reproduced rather well but intense greens, reds and cyan have a tendency to look unnatural. The gleaming Toshiba badge is attached to an eye-catching elongated ‘block’ that hangs from the TV’s bottom edge, creating at least the illusion that the 50UK3163DB is so darned clever that it’s had to fit in a dedicated box for all of its processing horsepower to sit in. Toshiba hasn’t gone for the full HDR sweep by also including support for the HDR10+ system that Samsung TVs favour over Dolby Vision.
